Question:

Using any combination of US coins (50 cents, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny), what is the largest amount of money you can have that does not make change for a dollar?

Answer: Start with the largest denomination of coin and work down to the smallest.

  1. One 50 cent coin (Cumulative sum: $0.50)
    • Two 50 cent coins would give change for a dollar.
  2. One quarter (Cumulative sum: $0.75)
    • One 50 cent coin and two quarters would give change for a dollar.
  3. Four dimes (Cumulative sum: $1.15)
    • One 50 cent coin and five dimes would give change for a dollar.
  4. Zero nickel (Cumulative sum: $1.15)
    • One nickel with one 50 cent coin, one quarter, and two dimes would give change for a dollar.
  5. Four pennies (Cumulative sum: $1.19)
    • Five pennies with one 50 cent coin, one quarter, and two dimes would give change for a dollar.

 

Answer is $1.19
