Israel Englander

Israel Englander is the founder of Millennium Management, a global hedge fund founded in 1989. Israel Englander started his career with Kaufmann, Alsberg & Co., a trading, investment banking, and brokerage firm, where he focused on trading convertible securities and options. In 1977, he formed a floor brokerage house, I.A. Englander & Co. in which he still owns a passive interest. In 1985, Israel Englander and his partner, John Mulheren Jr., started an investment firm called Jamie Securities with a $75 million investment from the Belzberg family of Canada. John Mulheren was later arrested for carrying a loaded assault rifle and was convicted of orchestrating illegal stock trades (ruling was later overturned). Jamie Securities was dissolved in 1988 due to negative publicity.

In 1989, Israel Englander started Millennium Management with $35 million in seed money, including $5 million of his own money and another $2 million from the Belzberg family. Millennium Management manages approximately $36 billion as of March 1, 2018 with more than 2,400 employees working across offices in the US, Europe, and Asia and is one of the largest multi-strategy hedge funds in the world.

Israel Englander was born in 1948 and was raised in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. He earned his B.S. degree in Finance from New York University in 1970. He later enrolled in NYU’s MBA program in the evenings but never completed the degree. In 2006, the Englander Foundation, headed by Israel Englander and his wife, donated $20 million to Jewish organizations and schools.
